Storm Thorgerson is most well known for producing famous album covers for bands such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, 10CC, Yes, Peter Gabriel, Black Sabbath and Paul McCartney, as well as many others.
Born in 1944 in Hertfordshire, Storm’s career first began to take off in 1968 when he joined with Aubrey Powell to form a graphic design studio specialising in creative photography; named ‘Hipgnosis’.
In 1983, Storm and Aubrey created ‘Green Back Films’ with Peter Christopherson. With this they embarked on producing numerous rock videos. In 1994, Storm directed six short videos for Pink Floyd, which were screened at concerts during their world tour.
Storm continues to design album covers and direct the occasional film along with writing and designing several books.
On photography, Thorgerson once said: “I like photography because it is a reality medium, unlike drawing which is unreal. I like to mess with reality… to bend reality. Some of my works beg the question of is it real of not?”
Storm’s style is known to be both stunningly dreamlike, and abstract
yet still with a shock of reality. Each image has a sense of a strong
visual message, and overall impressive feel.
