Nicola studied fine art at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, majoring in painting and ceramics. She spent many years teaching and painting in South Africa before moving to Scotland to live with her husband Ludo, who she met whilst studying meditation in India.
Nicola now lives in the same part of Scotland from which her ancestors left in about 1850.
Nicola says of where she lives: “Durness has such striking landscapes with strong mountains and beautiful beaches, and the colours change with every season”. The area is a great inspiration to her; she finds herself “moving from expressive oil paintings to increasingly abstracted acrylic paintings, often finding spiral shapes turning up in my work like ancient watermarks”.
Nicola paints mostly in oils and acrylics on canvas. Most of her work
is available as limited edition prints. She also loves to work on small
collages using scraps of paintings with the addition of her marble rubbings.
