Laurel Steinbeck
I was born in Hertfordshire and introduced to photography at a very
early age due to my father sharing the same interest, the art of painting
with light.
I took my first ever photograph when I was only eight years old, under
my father’s careful guidance and with his much treasured Kodak
‘Box Brownie’, which I still have in working order.
Since those early years, I’ve had many cameras pass through my
hands and at the age of fifteen and due to my increasing interest in
photography, my father bought me my first 35mm SLR, a Zenit E, complete
with standard and telephoto lenses, all neatly housed in an aluminium
carry case and in those days, the price tag of £50 was considered
an expensive purchase.
I’ve also left my fingerprints on a Praktica, Olympus, Nikon and
a Mamiya RB67 and I now work with a modest Canon 35mm digital system
and a Bronica ETRSi system.
My photographic subjects are varied but my real passion is for landscapes.
I don’t know why but there’s something about being outside
in the open, up against the elements with the wind in your hair and
the flies on your teeth – marvellous!
